This Week With George Stephanopoulos

I'm not a George Stephanopoulos fan, but the fuss over his becoming the anchor of the ABC News Sunday morning chat show This Week is a bit rich. My old pal Bill Kovach is quoted in today's New York Times as saying that the appointment of Stephanopoulos is "depressing."

"His whole career has been as a partisan," says Kovach. "Partisanship itself is fine in politics, but not in a journalistic forum."

Please. Kovach himself was a flack for Robert Kennedy during his 1968 presidential campaign. Tim Russert, who rules the Sunday morning chat show roost, was a flack for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) and Governor Mario Cuomo (D-NY) prior to joining NBC News. Diane Sawyer was a flack for Richard Nixon, prior to joining CBS News. And the list goes on (and on).
