Pebble Beach.

Sunday at the US Open is really unlike any other day in golf. It bears down on the world's best players and converts the slightest flaw into ghastly mistakes.

Yesterday at Pebble Beach resembled Sunday at Winged Foot a few years ago, with many of the world's best players in position to win the tournament. None of them did.

Yesterday, Graeme McDowell won, by sheer force of will. The big guns -- Els, Mickelson, Woods -- fell victim to their slightest flaws. The fact that McDowell won a war of attrition does not diminish the accomplishment.
